Wilfred Laurier Hires 12 new BIPOC Educators

Wilfrid Laurier University has committed to hiring at least six new Indigenous faculty members plus six Black faculty members.

The 12 positions will be tenured and tenure-track faculty appointments for emerging and established scholars under an initiative called Inclusive Excellence, the university announced Wednesday. It’s one of several actions to address systemic racism, outlined in the university’s plan for equity, diversity and inclusion.

“This program is just one way that Laurier continues to intentionally build a thriving community that embraces diversity and inclusion,” said Deborah MacLatchy, the university’s president and vice-chancellor.

Positions will be defined over the summer and posted in September. Recruitment will happen throughout the fall.

These are new positions, not replacements for existing faculty who leave or retire, the university said.

The scholarship will be aligned with six themes that are part of the university’s strategic research plan: environment and sustainability; psychological and social determinants of health and well-being; governance and policy; Indigeneity, decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion; business, technology and innovation; and society, culture and community.

“The collaborative effort and approach that made this initiative possible is something to be celebrated,” said Barrington Walker, associate vice-president: equity, diversity and inclusion, who is leading the university’s strategy.

“I’m proud of the work that we’re doing, and the plans we continue to drive forward, as we remain committed to ensuring an inclusive experience for Laurier students, faculty, and staff alike.
